A Message from the PTA President – May 2012

May is a very important month for our kids. This is the month they take their STAR testing. As parents, it is our job to insure that our kids are well rested, and present to do their very best on these tests.
As usual, May is a busy month with the Del Cerro PTA. The week of May 7 – 11 is Teacher Appreciation – a special week set aside to show some extra appreciation towards our wonderful teachers. Watch for flyers, and check our web-site for ideas about what you can do for your teacher! Our Talent Show committee is hard at work preparing for the next Del Cerro Talent  Extraordinaire! Boy we have a lot of dedicated, talented kids at this school!! It’s going to be a show worth waiting for! Be sure you mark your calendars for May 11th.
The week of May 14th through the 18th, Del Cerro will be partnering with the Salvation Army in a very special activity. Del Cerro has agreed to collect pairs of used shoes in bins provided by the Salvation Army. At the end of our week, the bins will be collected and weighed, and the Salvation army will pay the Del Cerro PTA 75 cents for every pound of paired shoes! The shoes will be sent to 3rd world countries, and be used to help the needy. What a great partnership!
So, go clean out those closets and bring us your old shoes!!!
June 1st the Del Cerro playground will be converted into Camp Dolphin! Our annual campout will have a few new twists this year! Join us for Astronomy fun, and take your chances at winning a night in the Del Cerro Cozy Cottage – a pre-set up, luxury  tent, with accommodations for up to 4 family members will be awarded to the lucky winner of the raffle!
Watch your local backpack for further information and order forms. May 17th is the date of our final General Meeting this year. We are already laying plans for next year, and at this final meeting  we will be adopting our proposed budget, and exchanging ideas about some different fundraising options. It’s an important meeting; we hope you can join us! Best of luck to all of our students on their STAR testing!!
There is no doubt that they will make us all very proud! Be Well, Be safe. Happy May!!
Deepest Regards,
Cindy Back

Principal’s Message – May 2012

Dear Parents,
The week of May 7th is Teacher Appreciation Week at Del Cerro. This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize the diligence and skill of the teachers who have worked with your child during this school year. This recognition does not require money or special gifts. It is a great time to honor these public servants with a sincere “note of thanks” from you and your child. Nothing means more to teachers than the acknowledgement they receive from the students they teach and the parents they collaborate with during the school year. Our PTA will be organizing a special luncheon for our teachers on your behalf and any assistance that can be provided will be greatly appreciated.
Rodger Mudd points out that “no calling in our society is more demanding than teaching; no calling in our society is more selfless than teaching; and no calling is more central to the vitality of a democracy than teaching.”
Lindley Stiles reflects that “The world seldom notices who teachers
are, but civilization depends on what they do.”

TEACHER
You are not the kind of teacher who
only teaches the things on written
pages. You’ve taught me how to
live my life and how to think for
myself. I can never repay you; I
can only thank you and try to make
you proud of me. But I want you to
know that whatever I become, however
far I go in life, I owe so much
to you. You are a treasure,
never to be forgotten.

Teaching is the profession that creates all others!! Your efforts and those of your children reaffirm that quality education for our young people continues to be our greatest challenge as well as our most vital responsibility. It also  recognizes how much we rely on teachers with the help of parents to provide guidance, support, and encouragement to our students. Your support of this special week will help us focus attention upon the critical role education plays in our society. There are few adults who do not recall vividly the teachers who  provided him or her with inspiration and contributed a positive impact on their learning.
This is a great time to acknowledge those contributions for the teachers of Del Cerro!! Larry Callison, Principal

Shoes for Salvation Army

It is with Great Pride that Del Cerro PTA announces a partnership with the Salvation Army!!
From Monday, May 14th to Friday May 18th, Del Cerro will be collecting used pairs of shoes. The shoes are to be placed in special bins provided by the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army will collect those bins from Del Cerro, and will pay our school 75 cents for every pound of paired shoes!!!! The shoes will then be distributed to third world nations, and the needy.
So, clean out those closets and garages of all the shoes you’ve been meaning to get rid of, and let lend the Salvation Army a hand.

Teacher Appreciation Week May 7-May 11

Please join Del Cerro in thanking & cheering our wonderful teachers!
Here are some great ideas for students and families to show their appreciation:

  • Monday: Bring a flower. (store or from your garden.)
  • Tuesday: Bring in a card, picture or poem. (Handmade is great! Get creative!)
  • Wednesday: Bring in a small sweet treat. (favorite drink, cookie, candy, or an apple!)
  • Thursday: Bring in a school supply. (sticky notes, markers, pens, pencils, glue sticks, etc.)
  • Friday: Wear your Del Cerro shirt or your teacher’s favorite color. (be sure to ask)

Students: Don’t forget to be on your best behavior all week! Your teacher will love that the most!
