PTA President’s Message February, 2012

January has flown by, and we have another month packed full of events. This year, Del Cerro is   joining efforts with our local PTA Council to send some friendship and thanks to our service men and women. Del Cerro’s families are being encouraged to create some Valentine greeting(s) and deliver them to school (either your teacher, or the front office) no later then Feb 10th. At that time, with the gracious assistance of the Shaver Family, the Valentines will be collected and distributed to the Wounded Warriors Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton.
Valentine-Grams – You can have a small bag of treats and a Valentine greeting sent to your child or teacher. Grams are available for $1 each, and will be delivered to the student’s class. Order forms have been sent home with students, and are also available in the front office. Proceeds will benefit the “Pennies for Ernest Scholarship Fund”.
February 13 – 16 is “Take Your Family to School Week!” Parents are encouraged to join their students for lunch during this week. Be sure to sign in at the front office and get a ‘Visitors’ Badge, before proceeding to the lunch area. We would also like to invite you to join your student’s class for their Arts Masters Lecture on Thursday. This month we will learn about the life and styles of Van  Gough!
Family Fun Night – Science Fun and Child Protection ID’s!!! Wednesday, February 15th 6 –
7:30! Our very wonderful Science Teacher, Mrs. Wenzel will have all kinds of fun activities to entertain our kids. Also available that night, New York Life will be providing free identification cards for students, as well as an information sheet that will help protect your child in case of an emergency. Parents must be present for students to be able to participate in the Free ID program. Please remember that Family Fun night is NOT a drop-off event. Students must be accompanied by an adult.
February 16th at 7pm will be our General Meeting for the month. Our nominating committee has been hard at work trying to fill the slate for next years offices, and we will hear their findings at this meeting. February 24th is our annual Jog -A-Thon!!! This is a major event for our school and PTA, and this year our jog-a-thon committee has outdone themselves with an Olympic theme, and coordinating activities. By now, you should have received an envelope to record and collect your jog-a-thon pledges. If you did not receive one, please contact the front office for a duplicate.
Good thing this is a Leap-Year because we could sure use the extra day with all the events we have going on!!!
Thanks for all your support for all that we do, and we look forward to seeing you at our next General Meeting on February 16th, at 7pm.
Deepest Regards,
Cindy Back

Principal’s Message February, 2012

Dear Parents,
Del Cerro will have some special visitors on Tuesday, February 7. We will have a team of educators from the Orange County Department of Education conducting a site validation to determine Del Cerro’s candidacy for being recognized as a California Distinguished School for 2012. Our school is very excited about the visit and we want to invite parents to be interviewed by the team on Tuesday between 1:00 and 1:30 in our MPR. This is a great opportunity to share the good things that are happening for your children at Del Cerro. Many PTA members will be there and we hope those  parents who have the time will join us for this special day. The Visiting Team will be here for the  entire day going into classrooms and talking with students and staff about the school and its two “Signature Programs” which are our Reading Counts reading program and our Science program. Both of these programs receive support from you and the PTA and we are anxious to showcase these great programs that allow our students to be successful.
Del Cerro became a candidate for this educational honor by having excellent test results and by “narrowing the gap” for educational achievement for our students. There are only four schools in  our district that have been selected to receive visits and only 46 schools in Orange County, so Del  Cerro is in very “distinguished” company. If you consider that there are 25 elementary schools in  our district and over 500 elementary schools in the county, it is easy to see why our staff is so  pleased with this recognition. But “beyond the numbers” Del Cerro is a great school because of the  parents, community, and staff that work together to bring quality instructional programs to our  terrific students. Education is a collective effort that only succeeds when the home and school are  combining their efforts every day. We strive to have a partnership of staff, parents, and community committed to the well-being of all of our students at Del Cerro.
Please join us if time permits to share why you think Del Cerro is deserving of being recognized as a California Distinguished School.
Larry Callison, Principal
